Since firmware version v2.43 one-axis gimbals are officially supported by the STorM32 controller.

Some general points:

  • The unused motor axes must be disabled, i.e. the respective parameters XXX Motor Usage in the [GUI:Setup] tab must be set to “disabled”.
  • A 2nd IMU is not used. It can be disabled (Imu2 Configuration = “off”), or not, doesn't matter.

The following comments by users refer to the days when the STorM32 didn't officially support 1/2-axis gimbals. They might be of interest nevertheless.

Roll-Only Gimbals

ZaksterBlue's Solution

User ZaksterBlue at rcgroups has worked out how to get his roll-only gimbal working on his plane, see this post https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?2055844-STorM32-BGC-32-bit-3-axis-brushless-gimbal-controller/page224&perpage=50#post40171175. He also has made a great video showing setup and results:

Stunt Double's Solution

User Stunt Double at rcgroups has installed a roll-only gimbal on a FPV racing quad and demonstrated great performance and results, see this post (and followup posts in this thread): https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?2055844-STorM32-BGC-32-bit-3-axis-brushless-gimbal-controller/page227&perpage=50#post41538235

With a similar/identical gimbal build he also got great result on a wing: https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?2055844-STorM32-BGC-32-bit-3-axis-brushless-gimbal-controller/page227&perpage=50#post41546127
